The initial orthodontic consultation with Dr Fern Jean-Joseph is a dedicated 50-minute appointment — deliberately longer than a standard consultation — to allow time for meaningful dialogue and a thorough assessment.
This first meeting gives patients the space to express their concerns in detail, while allowing Dr Fern to carefully examine not only the teeth and bite, but the overall smile and facial balance.
Rather than using technical terminology, she explains everything in clear, accessible language, showing before-and-after cases similar to the patient’s own situation and discussing what may happen over time if no treatment is undertaken.
Dr Fern often describes this consultation as a ballet: the patient speaks, Dr Fern examines, together they review comparable cases, then the patient looks at their own smile in the mirror with fresh understanding. “I’m going to tell you the story of your mouth,” she likes to say — and this moment is often transformative.
Patients gain clarity, perspective, and become active participants in their care, fully understanding why treatment is recommended.
As a result, most patients naturally choose to proceed with a full orthodontic case assessment, including a panoramic X-ray and digital study models, followed by a second 50-minute diagnostic consultation a few days later, where Dr Fern explains the problem in depth and presents all treatment options clearly and thoughtfully.
